What It’s Actually Like to Shoot a Full-Auto Machine Gun for the First Time

A lot of people walk into The Machine Gun Nest not really knowing what to expect from the machine gun experience. Some are excited. Some are nervous. Some have wanted to do it for years and finally decided to stop saying “someday.”

And almost everybody says the same thing afterward: “That was way more controllable than I thought.”

Movies have done a pretty terrible job of showing what shooting a machine gun is actually like. Real full-auto shooting isn’t somebody wildly spraying rounds while flying backward across a room. It’s loud. Fast. Adrenaline-filled. But with the right setup and a good instructor next to you, it’s also surprisingly manageable.

Before anything starts, one of our Range Safety Officers walks you through the firearm, explains how it works, how to hold it, what to expect, and stays with you the entire time on the lane. Nobody’s just handed a machine gun and told “good luck.” Honestly, that’s part of what makes the experience fun instead of stressful.

And then comes the first trigger press. Not gonna lie, most people laugh.

Not because it’s scary. More because your brain almost can’t process how fast it happens the first time. Even a short burst feels completely different than shooting semi-auto. You feel the action cycling, hear the rhythm of the gun running, and suddenly understand why people get hooked on it.

The biggest surprise for most first-timers is usually how quickly a magazine disappears. You think you’re doing a tiny little trigger press and suddenly you’re halfway through the mag.

Different guns feel completely different too. An MP5 is smooth and easy to control. A Thompson has that old-school heavy feel. Something like an M249 SAW is just pure chaos in the best possible way. And honestly, half the fun is trying different platforms and seeing what you like.

Another thing people don’t expect? The environment. A lot of folks assume shooting ranges are going to be intimidating or filled with people trying to act tactical all the time. That’s never really been our style at The Machine Gun Nest.

We built this place because we’d been to ranges where new people were treated like they were stupid for asking questions. We hated that experience and wanted to create something different: a place where somebody can walk in with zero experience and still have an incredible time. That’s why our staff spends so much time walking people through the experience instead of just standing behind the counter.

And if you end up loving it, there’s more good news: TMGN members can shoot full-autos for free on Wednesdays. It’s become one of the most popular perks we offer.

No reservation needed. Just walk in, talk to the team, and we’ll help you figure out where to start.
