Maryland's Glock Deadline Just Moved Up: What Buyers Need to Know About December 13

For months, Maryland gun owners have been hearing about January 1, 2027, the date when the state's new restrictions on Glock and other affected pistols are scheduled to take effect. Many people have understandably been treating the end of December as their last opportunity to make a purchase. However, new information we've received indicates that the deadline for submitting the necessary paperwork will arrive considerably sooner.

We've been advised that Maryland State Police will no longer accept new paperwork for affected Glock purchases after December 13, 2026. Applications already submitted and in the system will continue to be processed, but customers should not expect to initiate a new application after that date. While the law itself still takes effect January 1, this earlier administrative cutoff means that anyone planning to purchase an affected firearm has less time than they may have anticipated.

Why December 13 Matters

Maryland already has a fairly involved process for purchasing a regulated firearm. Buyers must meet the state's eligibility requirements, possess a valid Handgun Qualification License, complete the required paperwork, and satisfy the mandatory seven-day waiting period before taking possession. That process becomes particularly important when a new law establishes a firm deadline for when certain firearms can no longer be sold or transferred.

Under Senate Bill 334, Maryland will prohibit the manufacture, sale, purchase, receipt, and transfer of certain pistols beginning January 1, 2027, subject to specific exceptions. The law targets pistols defined as "machine gun convertible pistols," a category that includes many Glock and Glock-style handguns.

According to the information provided to our team, December 13 will be the last day MSP accepts new paperwork for affected firearms. Applications submitted by the deadline will remain in the system for processing, meaning the cutoff does not automatically cancel purchases already underway.

For customers, the practical takeaway is that January 1 should no longer be treated as the deadline to begin the purchasing process. Anyone considering an affected firearm should plan around the earlier paperwork cutoff and allow sufficient time to complete the required steps.

This Is About More Than Just Glocks

Although the legislation has become widely known as Maryland's "Glock ban," the restrictions are not based solely on the manufacturer's name. The law focuses on certain design characteristics, particularly the use of a cruciform trigger bar in pistols that meet the statute's definition. That distinction matters because other manufacturers produce firearms with similar internal designs, and the legislation gives Maryland State Police responsibility for developing and publishing a list of prohibited models.

We've discussed the scope of this law in previous articles, but the important point for buyers is that the restrictions could affect more than the Glock models sitting in our display cases. Anyone considering a handgun purchase should verify whether the specific model they want is affected rather than relying on the manufacturer's name alone.

Our Advice: Don't Wait Until December

We've spent much of this fall talking with customers about the upcoming restrictions, answering questions about which firearms are affected, and helping people understand what the changes mean for them. Our advice has been consistent throughout: if you've been planning to purchase an affected firearm, give yourself enough time to complete the process properly.

With this latest information, that advice becomes even more important. Between the state's paperwork requirements, mandatory waiting period, inventory availability, and the approaching holidays, waiting until the last possible moment creates unnecessary complications.

We also want to emphasize that purchasing a firearm should still be a thoughtful decision. A deadline doesn't change the importance of choosing a handgun that fits your needs, experience, and comfort level. Our staff can help you compare models, understand the differences, and make an informed decision without rushing into something that isn't right for you.

We'll Continue to Keep Maryland Gun Owners Updated

There are still legal challenges surrounding Maryland's Glock restrictions, and we know many gun owners are hoping those efforts will ultimately succeed. However, until a court changes the legal situation, we have to operate according to the law and the guidance provided to licensed Maryland firearms dealers.

We disagree with restrictions that prevent law-abiding Marylanders from purchasing commonly owned firearms, particularly when the criminal misuse these laws are intended to address is already illegal. Regardless of where someone stands on the legislation, gun owners deserve clear information about the rules and the deadlines that affect them. As we receive additional clarification from Maryland State Police, we'll continue sharing what we learn.

In the meantime, if you're considering purchasing a Glock or have questions about the upcoming restrictions, stop by the shop at 7910 Reichs Ford Road in Frederick, Maryland, to speak with our team. We'll help you understand the process, review your options, and work within the deadlines that apply.
